LUXURY IS PERSONAL!

Luxury is personal and nothing says ‘personal’ more than your bedroom. The industry has traded the phrase ‘master bedroom’ for primary suite or bedroom as a more politically correct term. So at risk of being cancelled, let’s go with primary bedroom suite for this article.

Primary however, could easily be traded in for premier as that room in my opinion should show all the signs of sophistication in the home. In other words, luxury! Let me hasten to say however that luxury is not about a price tag. While the term is usually associated with wealth, for me wealth is relative to least among things, financial wealth.

A luxurious primary bedroom suite is therefore one that reflects the taste and style of the owner to the maximum. It’s where you relax, recharge and recalibrate and so there is no excuse or shame in giving it your full attention.

So how does one create luxury?

  1. The right bed: Yes, you may only spend eight hours or less in it per day but those eight hours should mean a lot. That means the right size bed, the right feel for the mattress and the right bed lining. And never compromise on this. Treat yourself!
  2. A bedside rug: This is an easy way to add texture and warmth to your room. It actually is an extension of the bed in my opinion so that bedside rug should complement what’s happening with the actual bed.
  3. A headboard: In the same way that your bedside rug compliments your bed, so should your headboard. Your headboard is actually a simple yet effective way of bringing personality and functionality to the bedroom.
  4. Keep the real estate empty: I know in Jamaica we have a love affair with furniture and the more we have in a space, the better. Not the bedroom please. You want your room to be able to breathe. Remember we are going for relaxation and comfort and the bedroom at a glance and in function should facilitate this.
  5. Lighting: invest in a statement light fixture. Now this can be from the roof or either as bedside lamps. And while you are looking at statement, also bear in mind hue. Warm lights if you are more a morning daytime person or you could go with cool lights. Mix and match if you please with different lighting in different spaces in the room. Especially if you have an ensuite or a walk in closet.

These are just a few tips you can put to use or not. After all, luxury is personal!
