But why a man cave or a she shed?

Ever wondered what to do with that extra space in the house? Maybe the children have moved out or you’ve expanded and have found yourself with a little more room; literally. A man cave or a she shed may be the next home improvement project you’re looking for.

 

Generally, these are considered areas of the house not central; a garage, a basement or even an attic. Modern man caves and she sheds however can be created anywhere in the house; no matter how large or how small the space is. For me, it’s the function that counts.

 

But why a man cave or a she shed?

 

After a long hard day on the job, we all need the comforts of home. But not just home; a quiet retreat where we can chill out (perhaps with a glass of wine or a drink) and unwind.

 

But what should be in this sanctuary? Here are a few ideas.

  • A place to display the things you love: it may be a tad bit narcissistic to display your ‘precious valuables’ in the living or dining room. Keep them in your man cave or she shed. While it’s nice to show friends and visitors, for your family they’re over them. They’re over the stories behind them too. So stop telling them.
  • A game room: it’s ok to ban your significant other from entering into this space but there may be some exceptions. For example, instead of hosting in the kitchen or dining room, if it’s a small intimate group of friends, you could get them all into a game room where they will be occupied and entertained.
  • A home office: they say all work and no play is unhealthy but the converse can also be true. Your sanctuary therefore can be a mix of work and play. A home office in the space allows you to smoothly transition between productivity and some down time. In fact, as we continue to work remotely this may be a great solution to work-life balance.
  • A bar area: ensure it is fully stocked as well with all your favorites and those of your friends.
