If you’re anything like me, you have probably watched an HGTV show on interior design and thought, “I would love that in my home”.
If you’re anything like me, you have probably watched an HGTV show on interior design and thought, “I would love that in my home”. Perhaps, you have gone a bit further and thought “I could do that”
I couldn’t.
While I have the greatest appreciation for walking into a space and being totally blown away by the décor, attention to detail and the personality of the room, I have never fooled myself into thinking that’s part of my skill set. Now, I am not talking about the DIY project where you grabbed a couple items and ‘tun yuh han mek fashion’ (or style). Those are great and kudos to you if you can. However, I am talking about interior design; the real deal.
Truth is, unfortunately, conversations on interior design are often reduced to finding the right furniture and jazzing it up with an accent piece, a few throw pillows, the right colour paint and curtains and voila! Sorry to break it to you, but these things a designer not make. Interior design is instead is multi-faceted; utilizing creative and technical solutions within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. The process involves coming up with solutions for the space that are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and are aesthetically attractive. Most importantly, it involves great focus on the needs and resources of the client.Generally, interior design has seven key elements. They include:
Color
Form
Light
Line
Pattern
Texture
Space
Don’t worry, I don’t plan to get into details where these elements are concerned. For that, there’s always google. This post is really to create a greater appreciation about the art and science of interior design. The scope of interior design goes beyond décor and offers a range of services offered by a professional whose goal is not just to enhance the aesthetic of your space but also to enhance and protect your health, life and safety. So the next time you walk into a space, take a moment to appreciate not just the visual appeal but also the process and the person behind it.
After all, everybody can design but a nuh everybody a designa!
